Health practitioners have long promoted a balanced diet that includes fruit, leafy green vegetables and a minimal intake of sugar – but followers of the alkaline diet have taken this one a step further.
The diet, which is followed by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston, advocates the exclusion of acid-forming foods like dairy, meat, sugar and most grains.
Today’s typical diet consists primarily of toxic and acid-forming foods like processed sugar, artificial sweeteners, refined grains, conventionally produced meat and dairy and hidden genetically modified organisms.
Followers of the alkaline diet say that this lifestyle is ultimately unsustainable and damaging to their bodies.
The basis of this diet is rooted in the natural pH levels of the human body. The body is designed to maintain a constant pH of 7.4 in the blood. It does this by depositing and withdrawing acid and alkaline minerals from the bones, soft tissues, body fluids.
According to the Conscious Living Centre, when people eat too much acid-producing dairy and meat, the body is pushed off balance. Consuming more alkaline foods like fruit and leafy vegetables will help to balance the body’s pH levels.
Levels should be slightly alkaline and a “healthy” pH is between 7 and 7.5, although 6.5 is considered within the normal range. Achieving these levels could be as easy as adding more green vegetables, nuts, seeds and citrus fruits.
These are foods to emphasise every day in your diet and to eat exclusively to bring an acidic level back to balance. Vegetables are alkaline and necessary for health, say proponents of the alkaline diet. Unless a picky eater learns to eat whole foods, especially veggies, they can expect a lifetime of health challenges.
To maintain a healthful alkaline blood pH, at least 80% of total food intake should be alkaline foods and 20% acidic foods.
Children are notorious for being picky eaters and introducing them to this diet may take a bit more time, but it can be done, especially if you start them on it when they’re younger.
Green smoothies made from kale, spinach, apples, cucumber and avocados are a good way of easing children onto this eating plan. Adding more fresh fruit can disguise the more unfamiliar taste of the green vegetables.
The other great alkali-forming foods are root vegetables such as radishes, beetroot, carrots and turnips, cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli, garlic and cayenne pepper.
Follow the well balanced Manna Diet, which can help to eliminate acid forming foods from your diet.
Take the Manna PH Balance supplement each day to help restore the acid alkaline balance in the body. This supplement can help to excrete excess uric acid from the body to reduce the risk of gout and future arthritis.
