Fatty liver disease used to be something only found in people prone to over-consuming alcohol. However, it is now the most common cause of chronic liver disease in America! And this has nothing to do with drinking.
Some people with excess fat in the liver simply have what's called a “fatty liver”. Although this is not normal, it is not serious unless it leads to inflammation or damage.
Others have what's called non-alcoholic steatohepatisis (NASH). Although it is very similar to alcoholic liver disease, people with this type of fatty liver disease drink little or no alcohol. NASH can lead to permanent liver damage. The liver may become bigger in size and, over time, the liver cells may be replaced by scar tissue, this is called cirrhosis.
It can cause the liver to stop working right, and it may lead to liver failure, liver cancer, and liver-related death.
Causes of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
The exact cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is not yet clear. However, NAFLD tends to run in families, usually showing up in people who are middle-aged and overweight. These people often have other health issues like high cholesterol, diabetes, or pre-diabetes (insulin resistance), as well.
Other potential causes of fatty liver disease include:
- Medications
- Viral hepatitis
- Autoimmune or inherited liver disease
- Rapid weight loss
- Malnutrition
Recent studies have revealed that an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine and other changes in the intestine may be associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Symptoms of Fatty Liver Disease:
What makes fatty liver disease dangerous is the fact that symptoms are usually only seen when the disease has advanced over a few years, and then it can cause problems such as:
- Fatigue
- Weight loss or loss of appetite
- Weakness or lack of energy
- Nausea
- Confusion, impaired judgment, or trouble concentrating
- Pain in the center or right upper part of the abdomen
- An enlarged liver
- Patchy, dark skin discoloration, usually on the neck or underarm area
If cirrhosis develops, the liver loses its ability to function. This can cause symptoms such as:
- Fluid retention
- Muscle wasting
- Internal bleeding
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
- Liver failure
Diagnosis of Fatty Liver Disease:
It is best to visit your doctor or health care professional to get an accurate diagnosis, and he/she might use tests like:
- Blood tests
- Imaging studies
- Liver biopsy
Recommendation
If you struggle with diabetes or insulin resistance, we recommend that you follow the Manna Diet as given in the free e-book.
Take the Manna Blood Sugar Support supplement to control blood sugar levels, control cravings and suppress appetite the natural way without any side effects.
To rectify gut health and reinstate healthy bacteria we recommend the Manna GUT Support supplement, also with the Manna Diet, which eliminate sugar and starch in total.
