It has been long believed that cholesterol is caused by fat, and not by carbs. However, recent research seems to prove otherwise.
Carbohydrates seem to follow a certain sequence of steps which cause higher levels of cholesterol:
Carbohydrates can increase triglycerides which cause very low-density lipoprotein particles (VLDL) to be produced in the liver.
VLDL containing high amounts of triglyceride interacts with LDL particles, making them become smaller. This will be shown in higher LDL cholesterol values.
Smaller LDL particles are more prone to oxidation – Oxidized LDL particles are more easily absorbed by inflammatory white blood cells in the artery walls and atherosclerotic plaque.
Smaller LDL particles are more inclined to glycation, which is an important occurrence that makes the LDL particles cause atherosclerotic plaque more easily. Glycated LDLs are not recognized by the LDL receptor, which causes them to stay in the bloodstream longer than non-glycated LDL. Glycated LDL is therefore taken up by inflammatory white blood cells in plaque.
Apart from cutting down on carbohydrates, here are some natural remedies for high levels of “bad” cholesterol:
Herbs which can help to reduce “bad” cholesterol and increase “good” cholesterol are:
Guggul is the extract of the gum resin of the Commiphora mukul tree, which is natively found in India. Guggulsterones can slow down the production of cholesterol in the liver, may have an antioxidant effect on lipids and may have thyroid-stimulating properties
Green Tea extract –
Green tea reduces the absorption of cholesterol into the digestive tract, and at the same time increases the rate at which it is excreted. Along with this, green tea can prevent the oxidization of LDL to great extent.
Niacin (Vitamin B3) –
Vitamin B3, also known as niacin has been used for many years to help increase the “good” cholesterol levels, but it also helps get rid of the “bad” cholesterol!
Fenugreek seed extract –
Fenugreek seed extract has the ability to lower serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and helps maintain normal sugar levels in diabetics.
Manna Cholesterol Support contains all of the above mentioned herbs.
